The process of striking a piece of wood sufficiently hard with an instrument so that it will
fall into pieces has stimulated countless hours of discussion on technique and tool.
One can even read an entire book devoted to the subject.
The truth is,though, that there really isn`t a great deal you need to know about splitting
wood. It is sufficient to know the reasons why you must split wood at all,and to be familiar
with the splitting tool options available to you.
There are two reasons that large chunks of wood must be split: The most obvious is to reduce
the size of the chunk so that it will fit into your particular stove.
The second is to facilitate drying. The more surface area of the wood that is exposed to the
sun or air, the faster it will dry. Some types are especially difficult to dry unless split,
particularly members of the birch family. Indians favored birch bark canoes because water
would not easily permeate the tough white layers. The same characteristic keeps the wood form
drying well unless split, even the smaller pieces.
